Being prepared for an emergency can make all the difference when unexpected events occur. From severe weather and power outages to evacuation situations, having a plan and knowing what resources are available can help keep you and your loved ones safe.

The McKellar Fire Department, in partnership with the McKellar Public Library and the MLCA, invites local seniors to attend our Emergency Preparedness Day for Seniors on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the McKellar Public Library, 701 Highway 124, McKellar.

This informative session will provide practical guidance on emergency readiness and help residents better understand how to respond during local emergencies.

What You’ll Learn

Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about:

• The Township’s Emergency Plan
• Local evacuation centres and emergency warming facilities
• The types of assistance emergency services can provide during a crisis
• Some of the biggest challenges communities face during emergencies
• Steps individuals and families can take to become better prepared

There will also be an opportunity to ask questions and gain valuable information specific to our local area.

Free 72-Hour Emergency Kits Available

As part of this initiative, up to 30 free 72-hour emergency kits will be available for senior households residing within the Township of McKellar.

These kits are designed to help residents be self-sufficient during the first 72 hours of an emergency and include essential preparedness items. Kits are limited to one per senior household and will be distributed while supplies last.

The kits have been made possible through the fundraising efforts of the McKellar Firefighters Association and the MLCA.

Looking for a fun and practical sewing project this fall? Join us for a hands-on Sewing Workshop led by local instructor Nancy Howe, where participants will learn how to make their own microwaveable fabric cozies.

Taking place on Tuesday, October 6, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., this workshop is perfect for both experienced sewists and those looking to build their skills while creating something useful for everyday life.

This free event will bring together local organizations, environmental exhibitors, health and wellness resources, and community groups, creating opportunities to explore topics that support healthy living in all its forms.

Have you always wanted to learn how to knit? This fall, join Nancy and Catherine for a fun and beginner-friendly three-week knitting series where you’ll create your very own cozy toque!

Designed for complete beginners, this hands-on workshop will guide participants through the essential knitting skills needed to complete a simple hat project. Over three Thursday afternoon sessions, you’ll build your confidence, learn new techniques, and enjoy the satisfaction of creating something handmade.

We’re excited to welcome local artist Jane Boulet as our special guest instructor on Monday, September 29 at 4:30 p.m.

Jane will introduce participants to Neurographica, a relaxing art technique that combines drawing, mindfulness, and self-expression. Using simple lines, shapes, and patterns, Neurographica encourages creativity while helping participants explore new ways of thinking and creating.

Art Club is a drop-in program and no registration is required. Simply come by, grab a seat, and join in the fun!

Curious minds, future inventors, and science enthusiasts of all ages are invited to an afternoon of hands-on discovery as Science North brings its exciting Power Up! experience to McKellar.

On Thursday, August 6, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, the McKellar Township Covered Arena will transform into an interactive science playground filled with engaging activities designed to spark curiosity and inspire learning.

Led by Science North’s renowned Bluecoats, visitors will have the opportunity to explore renewable energy, experiment with circuits, test the power of magnetism, and discover how science influences the world around us. Through a variety of drop-in activity stations, participants can learn by doing—making science feel accessible, practical, and, most importantly, fun.

Whether your child dreams of becoming a scientist, loves building and tinkering, or simply enjoys trying new things, this event offers an exciting opportunity to explore science in a welcoming and interactive environment. Best of all, activities are designed to appeal to a wide range of ages and abilities, making it a great family outing.
